Frequently asked questions
Short, plain answers. When something changes, this page changes with it.
Psychiatric Evaluation
How long is a psychiatric evaluation?
60 minutes. The evaluation concludes with a clear clinical assessment and collaborative treatment plan.
Can a psychiatric nurse practitioner prescribe medication in Indiana?
Yes. A board-certified PMHNP licensed as an APRN in Indiana can evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe within scope.
Do I need a referral for psychiatric care?
No. Patients can book directly. Referrals from primary care providers or therapists are also welcome.
Do I need to know what is wrong with me before booking?
No, and most people do not. Working out what you are experiencing is what the first evaluation is for. Arriving without a diagnosis is the normal way to arrive.
Who is seen here?
Children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Care is provided across the lifespan.
Medication Management
How often are medication management follow-ups?
Typically every 2 to 4 weeks when starting or adjusting treatment, then every 1 to 3 months once stable, individualized as needed.
Can medication management follow-ups be done by telepsychiatry?
Yes, for patients physically located in Indiana. Some medications or clinical situations may require laboratory tests or specialized clinical coordination. Care is delivered through scheduled telepsychiatry appointments across Indiana.
How do medication refills work?
Medication is prescribed to last until the next scheduled follow-up. If additional medication is needed after that supply ends, another evaluation or follow-up is required.
Will I be put on medication automatically?
Not automatically. The evaluation comes first, and medication is one possible tool. If medication is suggested, you will hear what it is intended to do, expected timelines, common side effects, and non-pharmacologic alternatives. Declining is a respected choice and the discussion continues from there.
Therapy
What types of therapy are offered?
Supportive counseling and CBT-informed psychotherapy, tailored to each individual's goals. Care is trauma-informed throughout, ensuring the pace remains comfortable for you.
Can I have therapy without medication?
Yes. Many individuals attend for psychotherapy alone without psychiatric prescriptions. Which approach fits is an open clinical conversation based on your needs.
Can therapy be done by telepsychiatry?
Yes. Virtual psychotherapy is available throughout Indiana for patients who are physically located within Indiana at the time of their appointment.
Substance Use and Recovery
What substance use conditions are treated here?
Outpatient treatment for alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder, treated alongside co-occurring depression, anxiety, or trauma without judgment.
Do I have to stop completely before starting treatment?
No. You do not have to be completely abstinent before booking an evaluation. We meet you wherever you currently are and establish a safe, realistic plan.
When does withdrawal require emergency medical care?
Guidance on when withdrawal needs medical care: withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can be dangerous and potentially life-threatening. If you experience severe tremors, confusion, hallucinations, high fever, or seizures, call 911 immediately or go to the nearest emergency department. You can also call or text 988 for crisis support at any time.
